Local link building has two parts. Citations are mentions of your business name, address and phone number (NAP) on directories, maps and data platforms such as Google Business Profile, Apple Business Connect, Bing Places and Yelp. Local links are editorial links from websites connected to your area or industry: local news, chambers of commerce, associations, sponsors, suppliers and regional blogs.
Citations prove your business is real and where it says it is. Local links build the authority that helps you outrank nearby competitors.
Yes, but less than many sales pages suggest. Whitespark's 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors survey puts citation signals at roughly 7% of local pack ranking weight, well behind Google Business Profile signals (about 32%) and reviews (about 20%).
Citations matter more for AI answers, where citation-related factors carry about 13% of the weight. BrightLocal's 2026 consumer survey found 45% of people now use AI tools such as ChatGPT to choose local businesses, and its trust research found 62% of consumers would avoid a business after finding wrong information about it online. Clean, consistent data is baseline work you set up once and keep tidy.
We started from the services ranking and cited for local citation and local link building searches in September 2026, then checked each one's pricing, delivery time and listing ownership. Every provider is scored with our six-part method, and for local we weighed:
- Whether an audit and cleanup come before new listings
- Whether listings stay yours after you stop paying
- Price per listing or per location
- Turnaround and how quickly listings actually go live
- The ability to add genuinely local website links
Local SEO costs depend on whether you buy one-time builds, subscriptions or links:
How much local citation and link building costs| What you buy | Typical price | Examples |
|---|
| Manual citations, pay per listing | $2 to $3.20 each; aggregators $30 each | BrightLocal |
|---|
| Citation packages | About $35 to $60 for 35 to 50 citations | Citation Builder Pro, SEO Builder |
|---|
| Done-for-you citation build | $399 to $999 per location, plus $99 aggregators | Whitespark |
|---|
| Listing management subscriptions | $16 to $33 a month per location (Moz Local); $199 to $999 a year per location (Yext) | Moz Local, Yext |
|---|
| Local website links | From $29 per link | PRWiz, Stan Ventures |
|---|
| Custom local link programs | From $3,700 a month | Page One Power |
|---|
One-time manual builds from SEO Builder, BrightLocal and Whitespark create listings you keep. Subscription platforms such as Yext, Moz Local, Uberall and Synup sync your data continuously, which is convenient for multi-location brands, but the exit matters.
According to a July 2026 review, Moz Local's aggregator-fed listings revert to old data after you cancel, and a Whitespark field study found canceled Yext listings stayed, reverted or vanished depending on the publisher. Ask any subscription vendor, in writing, what happens to your listings when you leave.
Fewer than most packages suggest. Cover the core platforms first, then your industry's key directories, then a modest number of quality general listings:
- Google Business Profile, Apple Business Connect, Bing Places and Yelp
- The main directories for your industry (for example Healthgrades for clinics, Avvo for lawyers, Houzz or Angi for trades)
- Your local chamber of commerce and relevant associations
- About 30 to 50 quality general listings
Start with an audit, then fix data in the right order: upstream sources first (Google Business Profile and the Data Axle and TransUnion feeds), then duplicate suppression, then the remaining directories by hand. Fix them the other way round and the upstream feeds can reload the wrong details within weeks.
Once listings are consistent, these are the links that move local rankings:
- Sponsoring local teams, events and charities (platforms such as ZipSprout specialize in this)
- Features in local news and community publications
- Chamber of commerce and trade association memberships
- Supplier, manufacturer and partner pages
- Guest articles on regional blogs and city guides
- Local resources on your own site, such as neighborhood guides or cost studies
For years, citation services fed four data aggregators. That model has broken up: Acxiom left directory listings at the end of 2019, Factual merged into Foursquare in 2020, and Neustar Localeze now sits inside TransUnion. Data Axle, formerly Infogroup, still operates.
Direct feeds have taken over. Google Business Profile takes data straight from you, Apple launched Business Connect in January 2023, and Yext now sends data directly to 200+ publishers, including OpenAI since 2025. Clean citations now feed the chatbots as well as the map pack.
Avoid services that:
- Won't tell you whether listings stay yours after canceling
- Promise hundreds of directory submissions
- Skip the audit and go straight to new listings
- Use automated submission bots
- Sell national links as 'local'
