What link building costs in 2026: a study of 253,527 prices

We analyzed every priced guest post and link insertion we could find across 15 marketplaces to answer a simple question: what should a link actually cost?

Written by Asif RajaFact-checked by Mohammad QaiserUpdated

Short answer

In September 2026, the median guest post cost $240 and the median link insertion $262, based on 253,527 priced offers. Half of all guest posts cost between $104 and $561. Managed agencies typically charge $3,500 to $20,000 a month.

Key findings

  • $240

    Median guest post

The middle half cost $104 to $561.

  • $262

    Median link insertion

The middle half cost $115 to $600.

  • 4.5x

Price jump from DR 1–9 to DR 70–79

    $142 rising to $637.

  • 3.8x

Price jump with 100K+ monthly visits

    $152 for 100 to 999 visits vs $582.

  • 15.8%

    Multi-listed sites with a 2x price gap

Across 65,202 domains sold on two or more marketplaces.

How guest post prices are spread

Link prices are heavily skewed. The average guest post in our data cost $640, but the median was $240: a minority of expensive placements drags the average up. For budgeting, use the median.

  • 11.9% of guest post offers cost less than $50.
  • 24% cost less than $100.
  • 51.4% cost less than $250.
  • 72.1% cost less than $500.
  • 12.9% cost $1,000 or more.

The cheapest tenth of offers cost $42 or less. Some of those are fine small blogs; many sit on sites built mainly to sell links. At that price point, checking traffic and outbound links isn't optional.

Price by authority (DR)

Authority is the biggest single driver of price. The median guest post rose steadily from $142 on DR 1–9 sites to $637 on DR 70–79 sites, 4.5 times as much.

Above DR 80 the pattern breaks. Medians fall ($506 for DR 80–89) while the spread widens sharply: the middle half runs from $121 to $1,750. Very large sites sell everything from cheap contributor slots to premium sponsored features, so DR alone tells you little about what you're buying there.

The pale band in the chart shows the middle half of prices in each band; the dark bar is the median.

Guest posts vs link insertions

Insertions (niche edits) are often sold as the cheaper option. Across 77,074 insertion offers, the median was actually slightly higher at $262. They were cheaper than guest posts on mid-to-high authority sites, and more expensive on low-authority ones.

Price by organic traffic

Traffic moves price almost as much as authority. Sites with 100 to 999 monthly organic visits had a median guest post price of $152; sites with 100,000 or more visits had a median of $582.

Traffic is also harder to fake than DR, which is why we recommend setting a traffic floor before looking at any price list. Sites with almost no measurable traffic (1,611 offers) were the cheapest group at a median of $87, and usually the ones to avoid.

Price by country

Where a site's readers live changes the price. Among the ten countries with the most offers, German-audience sites were the most expensive at a median of $633, and Indian-audience sites the cheapest at $131.

US-audience sites, the largest group with 26,879 offers, had a median of $255; UK sites cost $316. Buy from the markets you sell into: a cheap link from the wrong country is still the wrong link.

Price by marketplace

Median guest post prices varied more than twentyfold between marketplaces, from $37 to $754. A marketplace's median reflects both the kind of sites it lists and the markup it adds.

Among the larger catalogs, Adsy ($140), eReferer ($141), PRWiz ($154) and Collaborator ($169) sat well below the $240 market median. Bazoom ($439) and Backlinked ($754) sat well above it.

Cheap isn't automatically good value, and expensive isn't automatically premium. The marketplace rankings show how each one vets sites.

The same website, different prices

65,202 websites in our data were listed on two or more marketplaces. Their highest and lowest guest post prices differed by a median of $52, but the tail is long.

The practical lesson is simple: before you buy a placement, search for the same domain on two or three marketplaces. It's the easiest saving in link building.

What agencies and services charge

Agencies price differently from marketplaces: by the month, with strategy, content and outreach included. These are the prices providers publish or that appear in 2026 industry roundups.

Published link building prices
ProviderWhat you getPrice
PRWizMarketplace guest postFrom $29
Rhino RankCurated linkFrom $60
FatJoeBlogger outreach linkAbout $80 to $495 (£60 to £380)

BlueTree DigitalMonthly plan, 6 links$3,500 per month
Page One PowerCustom campaignFrom $3,700 per month
uSERPLink building engagementFrom $5,000 per month

Siege MediaDigital PR retainerAbout $12,000 to $15,000 per month

How much to budget

  • Testing (one to three months): $500 to $3,000 for five to ten relevant links to a handful of pages.
  • Growing: $1,500 to $5,000 a month, mixing marketplace placements with a few premium links.
  • Competitive markets: $5,000 to $20,000+ a month, usually with an agency or digital PR partner.

How to pay less without buying worse links

  • Set a traffic floor and a relevance rule before you look at prices.
  • Compare the same domain on several marketplaces.
  • Don't pay DR premiums on sites with little organic traffic.
  • Ask what happens if a link disappears; a replacement window is part of the price.
  • Negotiate volume only after a test batch proves the sites are good.

Methodology

This study uses a snapshot taken on September 17, 2026 of 253,527 priced offers (176,453 guest posts and 77,074 link insertions) covering 97,930 websites across 15 marketplaces. The price data was supplied by PRWiz from its publisher index, which aggregates public listings from 14 link marketplaces alongside its own catalog.

  • Only offers with a listed price were included, and offers listed directly by domain owners were excluded.
  • Sites without a Domain Rating of at least 1 were excluded.
  • Domain Rating is Ahrefs' metric. Organic traffic is a Semrush estimate. Country is the site's top traffic country.
  • All prices are in US dollars. Marketplace medians include only marketplaces with at least 200 guest post listings.
  • These are listing prices, not transaction prices. Negotiated deals, bulk discounts and agency markups aren't captured.

Link building cost FAQ

How much does link building cost in 2026?

In our study of 253,527 priced placements, the median guest post cost $240 and the median link insertion $262. Managed agency programs usually cost $3,500 to $20,000 a month.

How much does a backlink cost?

A typical guest post or link insertion on a real site costs $100 to $600. Half of the guest post offers we analyzed cost between $104 and $561.

Why do high-DR links cost more?

Authority is scarce and in demand. Median guest post prices rose from $142 on DR 1–9 sites to $637 on DR 70–79 sites in our data.

Are link insertions cheaper than guest posts?

Not always. The overall median insertion ($262) was slightly higher than the median guest post ($240), although insertions were cheaper on DR 50–59 and DR 70–79 sites.

What are link building packages?

Bundles of placements sold at a fixed price, usually tiered by authority or traffic. Make sure you can see the actual domains before you pay.

How can I pay less for the same links?

Compare the same domain across marketplaces. 65,202 domains in our data were listed on two or more marketplaces, and 15.8% of them cost at least twice as much on one as on another.
